Fancy Learning to Sail ?

About Sheffield Scout Sailing – for Guides as well!

Sheffield Scout Sailing is constituted as a section of the Scout Association Sheffield Sheaf District and was established some 20 years ago to provide sailing activities, sailing courses and taster sessions for all sections of the Scout and Guide Associations in Sheffield.

We are based at Dam Flask Reservoir at Bradfield 4 miles west of the centre of Sheffield and together with the sailing club we have a fleet of more than 20 sailing boats available for courses.  We are part of Sheffield Viking Sailing Club whose premises we use, and most of our courses are open to members of the club.

We run two series of courses in the evenings from May to July, and several weekend sailing courses in the summer and autumn.  Some courses are mainly aimed at advanced sailors and instructors take place during the colder months.

We welcome beginners and experienced sailors, and the courses are open to leaders as well.  We can help novices to learn at their own pace and take them through a series of courses including the exciting RYA advanced modules and Instructor Training.

We also support other water activities in the Sheffield area, and provide support to Scouts in other cities in South Yorkshire and elsewhere.

Our Taster sessions are popular with both Scout and Guide groups, these usually take place in evenings and give youngsters the opportunity  to experience the fun of sailing  in a dinghy with an experienced sailor. Parents are encouraged to come along to watch and encourage their youngsters. It may be possible to round off  the evening with a barbecue on the bank side.

Participation in the courses can be used to contribute towards the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme.

All of our instructors and helpers are volunteers and none are paid.  The income from the courses we run is used to meet the costs of our operation including our share of the costs of operating at Dam Flask, boat maintenance and replacement, insurance etc.

In 2011 we introduced  FUNDAYS to our activity program on many Saturday mornings.  FUNDAYS are an opportunity for youngsters who can already sail to some extent – maybe having attended one course – to come and practice sailing in a fun environment.  FUNDAYS will include games afloat and friendly racing as well as some coaching to develop sailing skills, Click here for more details

We are part of the Scout Association Sheffield Sheaf District Charity registered with the Charity Commission under Charity Number 702823, and our accounts are submitted and audited as part of the charity.
